Malaria: Low risk in Kigali (altitude). Take prophylaxis for Akagera park.

Altitude: Kigali 1,567m. Volcanoes NP up to 4,507m — ascend slowly.

Safety: Rwanda is Africa's safest country. Kigali is safe day and night.

Transport Guide

✈ International Flights

RwandAir (rwandair.com) connects Kigali International Airport (KGL) to 30+ African cities. Also served by Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Brussels Airlines, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, British Airways. From London: ~8 hours direct (British Airways, Brussels).

🚗 Car Hire

All major car hire companies in Kigali. Self-drive on paved roads is easy — Rwanda drives on the right. For Akagera, Volcanoes NP and Nyungwe, lodges arrange 4WD transfers. Road quality is excellent by African standards. Budget: $40–80/day with driver.

🚐 Public Transport

Buses and minibuses connect all major towns. Kigali → Musanze (Gorilla): 2 hrs, RWF 3,000. Kigali → Rubavu (Lake Kivu): 2.5 hrs, RWF 3,500. Kigali → Huye (Butare): 2 hrs, RWF 2,500. All comfortable, air-conditioned. Moto-taxis for short distances.

🚁 Helicopter

Helicopters from Kigali to Volcanoes NP: 35 minutes (vs 2 hrs by road). Available from Akagera Aviation and several luxury lodge operators. From $600/person return. Most ultra-luxury lodges arrange helicopter transfers upon request.

📱 Communication

SIM cards at Kigali Airport: MTN or Airtel. 4G coverage across most of Rwanda. Tourist SIM with 5GB: ~RWF 5,000 ($4). WhatsApp works excellently for all operator communications. Power: 230V European-style plugs.

  • ✦ Maximum 8 people per gorilla family
  • ✦ Exactly 60 minutes with gorillas
  • ✦ Stay 7m away from gorillas at all times
  • ✦ No flash photography
  • ✦ Coughing/illness: mask up or stay behind
  • ✦ Minimum age: 15 years

🚫 Rwanda's Rules

  • No plastic bags — banned since 2008
  • ✦ No styrofoam containers
  • ✦ Participate in Umuganda (optional for visitors)
  • ✦ No public displays of affection
  • ✦ Photography of people: always ask first
  • ✦ No photography at military/government sites
